The People Speak Out, continued from front page
“I don’t want to see Carlsbad become another National City or Long Beach, with huge smokestacks at our gateway. And it’s not just the visual impact I am concerned about—I worry
about the increased air pollution, and the effect on our children, the children of Carlsbad. Let me
point out that the existing plant is only running at 8% capacity, and a recent article in the Wall
Street Journal maintains power usage is going down, not up. So there’s no need for additional
smokestacks on our coast—particularly not when those smokestakes will poison the air around
us, possibly for generations to come.”
Diana Arnold, homemaker and mother of three

"The City of Carlsbad is community committed to the well-being of its residents. A 540 mega-watt power plant on the beautiful Carlsbad coastline is not in our best interest. We need to start dreaming about the future of our city without smokestacks on the beach. NRG's proposal is the wrong plant, at the wrong time in the wrong place."
